Buvette des Bains des Pâquis

Cash on the Jetty

3.5 of 5

Leave the card at home. The Buvette des Bains is cash only, and it sits on the Quai du Mont-Blanc inside the Bains des Pâquis, a public bathing complex on the lake. The city of Geneva owns the building. A tenant runs the buvette, with 76 square meters inside and another 300 of terrace. That is a lot of outdoor seating for a place that does not much care whether you showed up.

This is the opposite end of the Pâquis from the five-star dining rooms a few hundred meters up the quay. Nobody here is paying for a view of a lake through a window. You are paying for coffee and breakfast at a counter, then carrying it outside to watch the water, the swimmers and the people who got up earlier than you. A public bath is the great leveler. The banker and the retiree in the same towel line look about the same.

I will not invent a menu for you, because the best way to learn it is to stand at the counter and read what is on offer. Prices run low by Geneva standards, which is to say they are merely high. Go early, take your coffee outside, and let the morning happen. If you want a meal with linen and a sommelier, there are plenty of those on this same quay. If you want a very good reason to be awake at eight, it is here, and it costs you a few francs in coins.
