Turkish coffee house in Asmalımescit, Beyoğlu, Istanbul
Mandabatmaz
Thick Enough to Stand a Spoon In
The name is usually explained as meaning a buffalo would not sink in it, and that tells you how the coffee behaves. Mandabatmaz serves Turkish coffee from a tiny spot down a passage off İstiklal Street, and one guide credits it with the richest cup in the city. It has been pouring since 1967, according to that listing.
There is nothing to read and not much to decide. You order the coffee. It arrives in a small cup with a thick head of foam, dense and dark, and you drink it slowly because the grounds settle at the bottom and you do not want them. The room is small and the decor is old. It is a cup of coffee, and one that took decades to get right.
Come in the mid afternoon, when the avenue outside is loud and the passage is not. Sit as long as you like and watch who else walks in. Beyoğlu is full of places trading on being old. This one actually is, and it only asks you for a few lira and a quiet ten minutes.
