Tavern and steakhouse in Red Hook, New York City
Red Hook Tavern
The Burger Nobody Shares
Van Brunt Street in Red Hook is a long walk from anywhere you were already going. That is how it keeps its character. Billy Durney, the chef and owner, opened Red Hook Tavern in July 2019, and critics describe its burger as Old New York nostalgia. The burger gets all the attention, but the room is why you stay.
The burger is the dry-aged Red Hook Tavern burger, $34, and the Infatuation put it on its list of the twelve best in America in 2024. It is the kind of plate where the whole table orders one and nobody offers to share. The 45-day dry-aged bone-in New York strip, at $130, is the splurge, and a fair one if the table has an appetite. For a drink, the Pre-Prohibition Julep and the Dirty Negroni fit the room, with cocktails around $17 to $21. Rainbow cookies close the meal, a Brooklyn handshake. In May 2026, BK Magazine reported a dark, moody cocktail bar next door, if you are staying later.
Weekend lunch exists, which makes it a good Saturday move. Reservations are available on the site. Get the burger. If someone at the table orders the salad, take a long look at them. A neighborhood tavern this good is the reason people tolerate the subway.
