Emirati seafood in Al Seef, Dubai

Al Fanar

The Lighthouse on the Creek

3.5 of 5

A fanar is a lighthouse, and the restaurant takes the name seriously. The Al Seef branch sits along the Creek with wooden furniture, lanterns and waterfront seats, built to look like the Dubai your grandparents would have known. It is a stage set. It is also a kitchen that has been cooking Emirati recipes since 2011.

Most of the pleasure is in the coastal cooking. Seafood leans on old recipes and local ingredients, and the dishes on everyone's list are machboos, jesheed, the seafood trays and, to close, luqaimat with date syrup and a glass of karak. The Michelin Guide lists it as Selected for 2025, which is a fair grade: a good place, honest, not a miracle.

Come in the early evening when the light turns soft over the water. Book through the website if you want the outdoor tables. It is a little polished for a tourist district, so go with company and order widely. This is a place to learn what Emirati food tastes like before you chase the harder, quieter versions. Good teacher. Good tea. The setting is half the sale, so give the sunset hour a chance. Share the tray, drink the tea, and let the lanterns do their work on the walk back.
